What to do if CNIC is lost

CNIC is an identity document and same is of very much importance  because it not only proves your citizenship of Pakistan but is also required to be produced on each and every forum.

There are bunch of purposes for which a CNIC is necessarily required to be produced. These purposes may include Obtaining Domicile Certificate, driving license, passport, registering as a voter, transferring property, mortgaging property, getting government employment,  obtaining loan etc.

Being a document of utmost importance, it must be kept in safe custody so that it may not be lost and subsequently misused.

However, if you have lost your CNIC, there is a possibility that such lost CNIC may fall into hands of any other person and be misused.

In this article, I have tried to explain what to do if CNIC is lost. If your CNIC is lost, you should take following necessary steps to avoid future complications and misuse of CNIC:-

1.    Report to Police

Either your CNIC has fallen down and been lost accidentally or same has been snatched by any one during robbery or theft etc, you must report to Police detailing the actual facts.

If missing of CNIC has taken place as a result of falling down, you may need to lodge a "Rapt". If missing of CNIC has taken place as a result of robbery/theft, you may need to lodge an "FIR".

Procedure to Lodge  a Rapt

If your CNIC went missing as a result of falling down during traveling or shopping etc, you can lodge a "Rapt" in that Police Station, in whose jurisdiction,  your CNIC has fallen down.

To lodge a "Rapt", you just need to go to the concerned police station and write an application in the name of SHO of same police station, mentioning the facts that your original CNIC has been lost during traveling, shopping etc on certain date. You may also be required to execute an Affidavit about loss of CNIC and submit the same in original in police station .

The Police will provide you a Rapt, in which all the details are mentioned like your name, your address, your CNIC number, detail of losing your CNIC and the area in which your CNIC was lost.

Keep this original "Rapt" in safe custody so that in case your CNIC is misused, you would have a proof that actually your CNIC was lost on specific date.  Also, save this Rapt digitally in your mobile phone or email account as well.

Procedure to Lodge  an FIR

If your CNIC has been snatched during robbery or went missing in result of theft, in this case, you can lodge an FIR in the police station in whose jurisdiction   incident of robbery or theft has taken place.

To lodge an FIR, write an application/ complaint in the name of SHO of concerned police station, mentioning the detail of incident of robbery or theft whatever the case may be, your CNIC number and other items lost during incident, date of incident and also write the name of robbers / thieves (if known) otherwise write "unknown persons".

On your application, the police may inquire into the matter and lodge an FIR on your application.  In this case, the police starts investigation and may try to arrest the accused/ robbers/ thieves and may recover your lost items including your CNIC through process of law.

2.    Obtain another CNIC

As your CNIC has been lost, therefore you should apply to NADRA (National Database and Registration Authority) for obtaining your fresh CNIC again.

No matter, you have copy of CNIC or not. Just visit NADRA and tell NADRA representative that you have lost your CNIC. NADRA will issue you your CNIC with fresh date of issuance and date of expiry.

Not necessary, but NARA may require you to submit an Undertaking about loss of CNIC/NICOP. So, do this accordingly, if so  desired by NADRA.

Though, you may not need to produce Police Report about loss of CNIC to the NADRA but still you should already have reported to police for your own safety.
