To avoid future complications, you should always keep your record up to date in NADRA. Marital status is one of those records, which you should keep updated in NADRA's Office.

If you have been married, you should approach to NADRA office for changing your marital status from "unmarried" to "Married".

In the same way, if you are married in NADRA's record but now have divorced your wife, in this case too, you should  change your marital status in NADRA's record from "married" to "divorced".

The above said instructions for changing martial status are not only for male but also females.

03 Complications, in case, the  marital status is not changed/updated in NADRA.

1.    Inheritance Property complication

A male who has divorced his wife but not updated his martial status in NADRA's record, if such person dies leaving behind his any property. In this situation, as per Shariah and Law, his divorced wife does not have a right to claim any share in the property of deceased but because of non updating the martial status, his divorced wife is still appearing as existing wife in NADRA's record. If wife take Family Registration Certificate (FRC) from NADRA wherein her name is appearing as wife of deceased, she by concealing the real facts, can apply for getting share in property of deceased even though she is not entitled to get any share in the property of deceased  because she has already been divorced by her husband, hence in this situation, there is an apprehension of deceased's property being transferred in favour of a divorced wife.

2.    Second Marriage complication

In Islam,  a woman is allowed to contract only one marriage at a time. Two marriages at the same time is not allowed to a women. However, after the death or divorce by her husband, she can contract another marriage.

If a woman whose marital status in NADRA's record is married, has been divorced by her husband but their martial status has not been updated in NADRA's record. Such woman may have to face difficulty in contracting another marriage because in her Identity Card, the name of her husband may be appearing and if this is not the case, then in NADRA's record her marital status may be appearing as "married". So, in this case, NADRA will not register another marriage of such woman because NADRA does not enter record of two marriages of same woman at same time.

So, such woman must have to change her marital status from "married' to "divorced" so that she may not find any difficulty in contracting another marriage.

3.    Child's Birth Registration complication

If the parties have married to each other and have given birth to their child but they have not updated their marital statuses in NADRA's record from "unmarried" to "married", they may have to face defaulting in registering the birth of their child/children in NADRA's record.

To register, such child in NADRA's record or to get his/her Form B, the parties should change their marital status in NADRA's record from "unmarried" to "married" so that they may not find any difficult in registration of birth of their children.

There are many other circumstances, in which complications may arise due to non updating martial status
